Birth As an American Rite of Passage
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (August, 1993)
Author: Robbie E. Davis-Floyd
Average review score:

Wonderful and thoughtful reading experience!
If you are a woman looking for a thoughtful review of our modern birthing culture this is a wonderful book. I have read a lot about birth options, perspectives of the birth experience, and midwifery history and philosophy but went away wanting for more. My desire to really explore an informed text about our birthing culture was finally satiated by this book. I am not an anthropologist by training and yet found the book accessible, educational, and challenging. I really suggest this book be read by everyone interested in the birth experience, partners, attendants, birthing woman, or children of technocracy.

An amazing look into the technocracy of birth.
This was a paradigm blowing must read for any woman. A fluid read and with intense narratives. The most educational book I've read in a long time.

Exposes Obstetric care as a disempowering ritual
The majority of obstetric procedures, from putting on a hospital gown to the birthing position itself, are unnecessary and sometimes dangerous rituals that are perpetuated by an authoritarian system in its desire to maintain control over a virtually uncontrollable process. Robbie Davis-Floyd has studied these rituals of birth; why taking the ride to L&D in the wheelchair sets up an invalid mindset in the laboring woman, and how the lithotomy position robs the woman of her birthing power, forcing her to rely on the medical professions to deliver her baby for her.

It is powerful stuff and difficult to accept, but truth sometimes is.

Black Feminist Thought : Knowledge, Consciousness, and the Politics of Empowerment (Perspectives on Gender)
Published in Paperback by Routledge (September, 1990)
Authors: Partricia Hill Collins, Patricia Hill Collins, and Davis
Average review score:

Groundbreaking and Painful to read
about how society conspire to restrain black women from realizing their potential as citizens in America. The racially skewed beauty standards is one. The relentless stereotyping of black women is another. Both tried to keep down the spirits of a group of women Americans trained to despise. I hope Ms. Collins comes out with another book about us.

Inspired
Patricia Hill Collins exemplifies a practitioner's and theorist's point of view on black feminism as it relates to Africa American and our African sisters. She references critical and inspiring data and quotes from a varied repetoire of authors, historians, and philosophers. The author explains the context and format of her subject upon initial reading. This book also draws commonalities among the issues and concerns among African American women and our international sisterhood (i.e., African, Carribean, etc.,) It illustrates the social and cultural values among all groups, the commonalities among the values while focusing on the African American feminist aspect. This is a must read for any person, be it woman or not, African American or other. It brings about a social and cultural understanding that is pertinent to the "holonomy" of understanding and appreciating varied cultural, social and historical values and experiences while commencing to the building of community. Please add this title to your collection of literature. You won't be disappointed; if for nothing more than to open your world to receive another perspective.

Insightful
Collins'analysis of black feminism is an enlightening piece of literature that forces its readers to chanllenge main stream assumptions and discover the underlying mechanisms of racism and sexism in America. To create this effect, she uses a range of feminist perspectives form the calm subtleties of Angela Davis to the slightly boisterous philosopy of Bell Hooks. Nevertheless, by displaying these perspectives equally Collins shows that the struggle for equally is not an individual struggle but one that requires collectively. This book is intensely thought provoking and it is guaranteed to give its readers profound insight into black feminism.

Change Your Life and Everyone In It: How To:
Published in Paperback by Simon & Schuster (May, 1996)
Author: Michele Weiner Davis
Average review score:

An Awesome Must Read!
At first glance, the title may seem manipulative, but really, when you are trying to change a situation, aren't you doing just that? Stop the nagging, threats and poor results from those efforts, life is too short. Stop wasting your time. Michele does a super job of keeping every word interesting and understandable - for the masses! I am ordering a few of her other books as well, since I like her approach and writing style so much. It's not all about changing others, it's about changing you too and the way you think. You won't be sorry.

You Really Can Change Your Life!
Making small changes in the way you do things really can affect the way the people in your life view you and act toward you. I loved Weiner-Davis' fresh approach to the problem of dealing with life's problems. For anybody who feels like their life is a constant reliving of the same old arguments with spouses and kids or in their day-to-day routine, here's real hope that you can make effective changes. For the first time in years, I'm feeling much more in control of my life!

Good Solution-oriented Help
This book is a real winner. Michelle lays out practical solution oriented help that focuses on what is working in your life and how to build on it. She is particularly insightful in relationship dynamics. Though this is by no means a Christian book, many of her principles are very biblical and extremely helpful.

The Complete Guide to Vegetarian Convenience Foods
Published in Paperback by NewSage Press (August, 1999)
Authors: Gail Davis and Neil Barnard M. D.
Average review score:

Indispensable!
Now why didn't somebody think of this sooner? I don't know how many times I've been walking down the aisle of my grocery store, noticed a new vegetarian item in the frozen section and thought, "Wow, I've gotta try that!"...only to discover it's got egg whites, or casein (a milk protein), or honey. Oh well. I invariably walk away feeling like we vegans get the short end of the stick when it comes to convenience foods.

Enter The Complete Guide to Vegetarian Convenience Foods. Except for the foods marked with symbols to tell you they contain casein or honey, every item listed is vegan. They are grouped by food type (soy milk, soups, burgers, etc.) and brand. My copy is completely marked up with notes of different foods I want to try. Of course, not all these brands will be found in my local area, but the great thing about this book is that I have the exact information to give my store manager when I request that they carry a particular item from a certain company.

All the foods in this book were taste tested, and if they didn't measure up, they didn't make the printing! So you can feel assured that the foods listed are at least worth a try. In fact, Gail Davis, the author, includes a symbols for Author's Favorite and Kids Pick. There is also a symbol noting the fat free items. But I have to say that I am most appreciative of the fact that no items containing hydrogenated oils (trans fatty acids, known to be quite dangerous to your health) are included in this book. I personally thanked the author for that. She has saved me loads of time!

Also included is a section on pets, a list of resources, and a list of suppliers complete with addresses and phone numbers. It's obvious that a tremendous amount of work went into compiling this useful tool, and every vegan family should have one. I wholly believe (pardon the pun) in a diet consisting mainly of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, seeds and legumes. But who doesn't enjoy a veggie burger or packaged cookie once in a while? People always ask me about how much time it takes me to read labels on every packaged food I buy. I tell them that although I do spend a lot of time researching my purchases, when I find a brand I like, I just stick with it. I don't have to read labels every single time I go shopping. And with this book, now I hardly have to read them at all!

Highly recommended for the vegetarian kitchen.
The Complete Guide To Vegetarian Convenience Foods is close to a comprehensive guide to vegetarian and vegan quick/convenience foods with appetizing descriptive taste reviews of products that are both healthful and delicious. Handy symbols by products' names indicate if it is fat free, author's favorite, kid's pick, contains honey, casein, or caseinate. Encouraging to theomnivore who is rethinking his/her diet, The Complete Guide To Vegetarian Convenience Foods delivers nonjudgmental convenient information on healthful choices. Quick tips are in grey-shaded boxes that highlight especially good ideas, menus, or food combinations. It even offers pet food resources, an index of suppliers, and suggested vegetarian resources on the internet. Some examples of products reviewed are Tamarind Tree's Curried Garbanzos and Potatoes, Golden Lentils with Vegetables, Garden Peas and Sauteed Mushrooms, Tender Spinach and Garbanzos, and Spicy Garden Vegetables, all under "More Easy Travelin' Foods". One thing missing is nutritional indices on foods and /or prices, but these are presumably available from suppliers. Foods are listed by manufacturers in specific categories for convenience. From Traveling Fare to Coffee/Sugar Substitutes, The Complete Guide To Vegetarian Convenience Foods offers palatable, easy, compassionate choices for the consumer.

What a godsend for me, my family, and our pets!
I already owned a copy of Davis' previous title, SO, NOW WHAT DO I EAT? And as she promised, this new edition contains all of the latest food updates and as a bonus, a new chapter on alternative sweeteners and a section on the dangers of cat litter. Now we are all enjoying incredibly delicious all-vegetarian ribs, chicken, and even a Cool Whip-like dairy-free topping. And our cats, Spot and Fido are enjoying the many benefits of their new non-toxic pine litter. I am so grateful to Gail Davis for helping to make all of our lives healthier and happier.

The Contemporary Christian Guitarist

Authors: Micheal Davis and Michael Davis
Average review score:

Knows His Stuff!
I am actually taking a guitar course from the author and we are using this book and I am genuinly impressed with his knowledge and ability and the book itself. This book is very straight forward and easy to follow. Even the most inexperienced musician could learn the basics of the guitar with this book. I recommend it not only because it is useful, but also because the author is such a great guy!!

The Contemporary Christian Guitarist
Michael Davis has filled a void for the guitarist who desires to honor God with music. Michael has tons of experience teaching students of all ages, and his extensive knowledge is readily apparent in this fine book. With the accompanying CD, the student can use the book with a "do-it-yourself" approach, but as always a teacher is best for the total beginner. Actually, the teacher will enjoy the book also, as the 2nd guitar parts (in the duets) are quite enjoyable to play. Sight reading is a valuable skill for the modern guitarist, and Michael walks the student through the process in a logical and easy to follow method. Before you know it, you're playing duets that are simple, but enjoyable. Of course it is impossible to cover all of the aspects of guitar playing in a single volume, but this book provides a great starting point for the aspiring guitarist. Whether your goal is to play solo guitar pieces, or to simply strum choruses, this book is a valuable and thorough resource for the serious and casual student of the guitar...

An indispensable tool for learning and improving guitar
I have been using this book for over 6 months to learn guitar, I really enjoy this book much more than any other I have tried to use. This book never gets old, it keeps the learning process fun and interesting. Many books only last for a very short period of time, they become boring and unchallenging. However The Contemporary Christian Guitarist reaches a wide range of levels ensuring a long lasting means to encourage growth in all aspects.

CorelDRAW 7 for Windows 95/NT: Visual QuickStart Guide
Published in Paperback by Peachpit Press (27 December, 1996)
Author: Phyllis Davis
Average review score:

Great book for beginners!
Of all the Visual QuickStart books that I've read, this book is by far the best. It explains how to use all of CorelDRAW 7's features in easy to follow steps that even a novice like myself can understand. Also, although it's not its purpose, it does a very good job in teaching the user about the software, beyond just merely how to use it. It gives the user an overview about what makes the software tick, without the overkill that one can find in other books about CorelDRAW 7. It has been a lifesaver for me, for it enabled me to teach myself the software, which is what "QuickStart" is all about.

Does what it sets out to do - good quickstart guide
I like the Visual Quick Start range of books a lot as they help me to get started with the minimum pain. I wanted a quick-in to Corel Draw (7) and this handy book summarises all the main functions of Corel Draw. It's entirely in black and white but is written in manageable sections that helped me to get started pretty quickly before I felt the need to look out for a more comprehensive manual. Well written, good value.

Step-by-step guidance with really cool graphics!
This book has the step-by-step guidance that I need when I work through a program as complex as CorelDraw 7! In addition, it is really visually awesome. The graphic design in this book puts it way above most computer software books. Using it, you'll find yourself opening whole new creative worlds

Dark Side of Fortune: Triumph and Scandal in the Life of Oil Tycoon Edward L. Doheny
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (05 February, 2001)
Author: Margaret Leslie Davis
Average review score:

Teapot Dome - Early Oil Industry
This book is a fascinating look at the life and times of one Edward Doheny the onetime founder of Mexican Oil Company prior to the nationalization of reserves by the revolutionary PRI party in the early days of their power. The narrative follows the career of Mr. Doheny from his modest prospector days in the Wild West to the heights of his infamy during the Teapot Dome scandal.

This is perhaps a timely book as well given the questions being raised at the time of this writing about corporate malfeasance and corruption in the U.S. (Enron). Teapot Dome was one of the biggest political scandals in the first half of the 20th century and involved the leasing of government/public lands in preserve areas for energy development. More than one person went to prison and wrongdoing was proven against multiple individuals in the matter.

The book makes the case that Doheny was more or less guilty of poor judgment and being in the wrong place at the wrong time more or less. It is true of course that Doheny was found innocent on the charges and it is also true that despite this Teapot Dome is the matter for which he is best known (despite for instance being a contemporary and rival of John D. Rockefeller in the oil business). If in fact he was innocent of the charges then he paid a heavy price in terms of his health and the somewhat mysterious death of his son, which was either suicide or murder depending on who you ask and how you look at it.

For those with an interest in the biographies of the early titans of U.S. industry this is a worthy read in that it does detail Mr. Doheny's rise to power as well as his fall from grace. He came from a modest background and did not make his fortune until after the age of 40 in a time before life expectations averaged 70+. He suffered through personal loses and setbacks and managed at the time of his death, despite the misfortunes, to bequeath a sizeable fortune to his heirs. This book may also be of particular interest in the study of Los Angelos in particular and California in general in that the Doheny's were prominent citizens who built some noteworthy structures in the city including religious and educational facilities.

The author acknowledges that she had the cooperation and blessings of the descendants of Mr. Doheny and that a good body of original documentation was available for review and research. This provides an intimate look at the lives of the people in question but it also may cause the thesis to lean towards their views. The book does tend to exonerate Doheny in Teapot Dome and it does make a good argument that his involvement was not profitable and that the Navy Dept in fact sought him out because of rising fears of the Japanese Navy in the years leading up to WWII. It was a condition of Mr. Doheny's development of the area under lease to him that he build an extensive oil storage and supply facility for the Navy in the Hawaiian Isles out of his own pocket. This he did and subsequently was not reimbursed when the lease was negated despite having spent many millions in pre-WWII monies. It is also I believe true to state that it was Henry Sinclair who was the actual lease holder on the Teapot Dome acreage and that Doheny was leased an entirely separate parcel of public land. Sinclair along with Interior Secretary Albert Fall went to prison in the affair but Doheny was also tarred and feathered by the affair.
Whether the delivery of $100,000 in cash by Doheny's son to Sec. Fall was in fact a personal loan much as one might expect between old prospecting buddies (which they were) is really a matter of conjecture. At any rate there was clearly the appearance of impropriety in the matter and both Doheny's son and the man accompanying him that night were involved in a murder/suicide after indictment but before trial. With the principle witness gone and little other corobative evidence Mr. Doheny's celebrity legal representation did get him acquitted although he was convicted in the court of public opinion.

Personally I am inclined to believe a man of his stature might loan a friend the sum in question but I also would not be surprised if a quid pro quo were expected in return. You see there was any number of companies competing in secret for the government contracts and it is interesting that both men who won had either the appearance of impropriety or were outright convicted of bribery. Part of the reason Doheny was spared prison was in fact due to the death of his son and his earnest and teary eyed appearance on the witness stand where he looked the part of a grieving grandfatherly figure who had lost something money could not replace.
It is an intriguing story and well written book, not terribly long or archaic for the casual reader. While it is a history book it is in fact also the story of an interesting chapter in American business and personality history.

Another terrific biography from Margaret Leslie Davis
Margaret Leslie Davis has done it again with another fine biography. Ms. Davis shows us the inner man of Edward L. Doheny, one of the richest and greatest Californians in history, virtually the John D. Rockefeller, Sr. of the West. Doheny was flat broke at the ripe age of 40 and yet within a few years he became one of the richest men in the country through his wild-cat oil discoveries in Los Angeles and Mexico. The break-up of Rockefeller's Standard Oil by the U.S. Supreme Court left Doheny an opening which he exploited adroitly. Most impressive is Ms. Davis's keen legal understanding and her scrupulous attention to noting her sources. In fact, the "notes" at the end of the book are arranged so that the top of the page refers the reader to the page number of the text thereby making it very easy to flip back and check the source. A small detail, perhaps, but much appreciated. Ms. Davis is a true scholar; her legal training shows itself especially when discussing the Tea Pot Dome scandal that ultimately tarnished Doheny's reputation. In short, Ms. Davis is becoming our finest historian on the West and particularly California.

Spellbinding Reading for History Lovers
Very few biographers could have sifted through the complex and oftentimes mysterious paper trails of Edward Doheny's life to compile such a mesmerizing tale of ambition, scandal, heartbreak, and murder. Margaret Leslie Davis, (winner of the Western Writers of America's Golden Spur Award for Best Nonfiction Book) exceeds her previous biographical effort to regale readers with a shadowy epic tracing the rise, fall, and tragic legacy of an American Icarus who flew too close to the sun.

Buy this book. You'll not be disappointed.

Don't Know Much About the Presidents
Published in Library Binding by Harpercollins Juvenile Books (January, 2002)
Authors: Kenneth C. Davis and Pedro Martin
Average review score:

This book is the Best
I like this book because it tells me all the facts about
the presidents and I love to study presidents. My 14 year
old sister needed help with her report on Theodore Roosevelt and
Franklin D. Roosevelt and she asked me because she knew I would
know some things! I have checked "Don't know much about the
Presidents" out of the library and since I have to take it back,
my dad said he would buy me my own copy to keep!

A Great Intro to the Presidents
This book is a wonderful introduction to learning about the presidents, even for younger children who express an interest. Our five-year-old is a good reader, and can manage much of this book herself. A great one to keep in the back of the car for short (or long) trips. Or pick a president each night to learn about at bedtime. This book is written at a level that can be appreciated by the younger set, but because it's got a sense of humor and some fun facts about each president, will also be enjoyed by older children (and adults!). We're enjoying re-learning about the presidents again with our daughter!

Everything You Wanted to Know about Our Presidents, and More
Do you know who was the youngest president ever elected to office, who served the shortest term, and who served the longest? Do you know which president had fifteen children, which was an avid fisherman, and who brought a goose, wallaby, donkey, lion cub, raccoon, two cats, twelve dogs, and birds to the White House when he moved in? The answers to these questions and much, much more can be found in Kenneth Davis' marvelously entertaining and engaging, Don't Know Much About The Presidents. Written in an easy to read, question and answer, conversational format, Mr Davis packs this book chock full of historical information, fun facts, and trivia. Learn about each of our 43 president's talents, idiosyncracies and family, his inauguration, important achievements, and life in the White House during the time he served. Each biographical spread is complemented by Pedro Martin's charmingly witty and humorous illustrations that enhance the text and just add to all the fun. With a detailed timeline highlighting important and interesting historical events running continuously along the bottom of each page, Don't Know Much About The Presidents is a treasure trove of fun and information that's perfect for kids 8 and up. So find out which president's good luck charm was a red carnation, and enjoy!
